Someone at Burson-Marsteller seriously screwed up (link is to Sam Gustin at Epicenter) when they thought they could get Chris Soghoian to take part in a twelfth-rate smear campaign against Google. I don’t always agree with Google’s public policy priorities, e.g., I think that the push for net neutrality regulation has been misconceived, not because the end-to-end principle isn’t important but because there is a legitimate place for differential pricing, etc. But that doesn’t change the fact that this plot against Google was sleazy, and I have to assume that Facebook has outsourced its PR strategy to people who would never hack it in other business units. I’ve only had the pleasure of meeting Soghoian once, but I know enough to know that there is no way in hell that he was going to play ball with something like this, and my guess is that anyone with an ounce of intelligence would have surmised that fact from a cursory Google — I mean, Bing — search.
Kudos to Dan Lyons at The Daily Beast for getting Facebook to own up to this Keystone Kops idiocy.
