A Marxist View of the Human Future

by Reihan Salam

Peter Frase outlines four potential futures for humanity. I was surprised by his interpretation of Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, a book I greatly enjoyed, and it occurs to me that there is much more to be said about “rentism,” e.g., one can imagine a version that does not rest on “material deprivation,” but rather that is undergirded by, say, an unconditional basic income grant. Regardless, it’s a very interesting essay that offers insight into the thinking of at least one vigorous faction of the university-based North American far left that’s been energized by the Occupy movement.
