Brief Note on Jon Husted

by Reihan Salam

The New York Times editorial board has published a short piece arguing that Republican officials are deliberately trying to suppress turnout in Democratic-leaning districts, and it singled out Jon Husted, Ohio’s secretary of state, for criticism. I found this odd, as Husted is one of the leading Republican critics of stringent photo ID requirements. The piece was recently updated with the following:

On Wednesday afternoon, Jon Husted, the Ohio Secretary of State, announced that all Ohio counties would follow a uniform early-voting policy. The policy would extend early-voting hours to 7 p.m. on weekdays during the last two weeks before the election, though all early voting is banned during the final three days of the campaign.

In my limited experience, Husted has struck me as a knowledgeable and fair-minded public servant, so I was disappointed to see an attack on his probity. Unfortunately, I imagine the update that appeared on the Times’s website will not appear in tomorrow’s print edition.
