People Freaked Out by Caitlyn Jenner Expressing Conservative Views on Her Show
Something happened on the second episode of Caitlyn Jenner’s reality-TV show that has some people really freaked out: She expressed conservative political views about welfare.
During Sunday’s episode of I Am Cait, a documentary series covering Jenner’s transition from a man to a woman, Jenner and a few of her new transgender friends were discussing social programs when she said something super controversial:
“A lot of times, they can make more not working, with social programs, than they actually can with an entry-level job.”
Jenny Boylan, co-chair of GLAAD, then jumped in and said, “I’d say the great majority of people who are getting help are getting help because they need help.”
Jenner then clarified:
“But you don’t want people to get totally dependent on it. That’s when they get into trouble. ‘Why should I work? You know, I’ve got a few bucks, I’ve got my room paid for.’”
Not wanting people to get dependent on welfare may seem like a pretty standard point of view, but you wouldn’t know it from the reaction on the show: All of the women shaking their heads to the tune of ominous music, leading into a clip of a follow-up “confessional” style interview with Boylan.
“Now I’m worried,” Boylan said in the interview. “Caitlyn has every right to be just as conservative as she chooses, but many transgender men and women need social programs to survive and that’s nothing to be ashamed of.”“Living in the bubble is an impediment to understanding other people,” Boylan continued. “If Cait’s going to be a spokesperson for our community, this is something she’s going to have to understand.”
(Note: Caitlyn Jenner nowhere in the clip stated that people who need welfare “to survive” had anything to be “ashamed of.”)
Oh, and of course, Jenner’s comments sparked a whole host of Internet think pieces – including one titled “You Know Nothing, Caitlyn Jenner” in the New York Times.
