Impromptus by Jay Nordlinger

It’s just a little news item, hardly worth noticing, but it encapsulates something I intensely dislike about America. Check it out:

Rep. Laura Richardson charged Friday the House Ethics Committee has singled her out for scrutiny because she’s African-American. . . .

The committee is composed of five members from each party. The ranking Democrat is a Hispanic, Rep. Linda Sanchez of California. . . . The five Republicans are all white men.

Who cares? America, that’s who. With all of this racial and ethnic toting up, we might as well be old South Africa. Congresswoman Richardson has cried race, lunging for the first refuge of a scoundrel.

The fact that the five Republicans are “all white men” tells you next to nothing. John Bolton is a white man, so is Noam Chomsky. JFK was a white man, so was Oswald (and so were Lincoln and Booth). Who cares?

I’m not a naïf, I promise you. You don’t have to preach to me about the wickedness of man, nor his tribalism. But stories such as the one I quoted above — and here it is in full — are nonetheless nauseating. To me, at least.

This little item suggests that new management at the Voice of America and related agencies wants to purge those places of “old white guys.” After reading it, I said something to John O’Sullivan, who is just leaving Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty: Is there anything stupider than age? Is there anything stupider than race? Is there anything stupider than the combination of age and race?

But the whole world is in love with both age and race. It is perhaps their two favorite criteria. Have you noticed?

Have a little item from my hometown of Ann Arbor, Mich. It begins, “The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan filed a lawsuit against the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority Monday morning for its refusal to run an anti-Israel ad on AATA buses.”

The ad says, “Boycott ‘Israel,’ Boycott Apartheid.” Notice the quotation marks around “Israel.” (Because there is no such thing as Israel, say these haters.) Also, the ad has a Satanic image of skulls and whatnot.

As I have said many times, it is a goal of the Left — a large segment of the Left — to make Israel equal with old South Africa. To equate Israel with apartheid South Africa in the public mind. Israel as apartheid state is a cherished belief of the Left (or this particular Left). Remember, Jimmy Carter titled a book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.”

One of the few to push back against this notion — this lie — is, of all people, Richard Goldstone (of the infamous and libelous Goldstone Report). I wrote about this remarkable development in a column, here, last month.

I’m surprised that Ann Arbor has so far kept that ad — those awful words, that awful image — off its buses. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Leka, the crown prince or king of Albania, has died. Crown prince or king? Take your choice. Anyway, he was a man, and he died at the end of last month in Tirana. Specifically, he died in Mother Teresa Hospital. You may recall that Mother Teresa was born to an Albanian family, living in Macedonia.

I met Leka, six years ago. He was one of the most extraordinary — I would even say haunting — people I have ever encountered. This was during a trip to Albania in the company of several others. I wrote a journal for this website: The relevant entry can be found here.

“Leka has had a very rough time of it,” I said. “His mother died not long ago, and so did his wife. He himself is ill: gaunt, super-thin, ghostly. He wears what appear to be hospital clothes. He also chain-smokes and drinks frequently from a dark cup; I’m later told that it contained whisky — it might act as a painkiller. About him is a striking sorrow: sorrow for himself, and sorrow for his nation. He also has great dignity. . . .”

I agree Jay. She loses all of her credibility when she plays the race card especially against John Bolton! I would like to have his name on my dance card on an NRO cruise! What is with this woman? Another great Impromptus Jay! Thanks!

I’m always amazed at the vehemence and vitriol of anti-Israel antipathy. I mean it’s not as if we don’t have Islamist regimes repressing untold millions, utter and abject corruption and misery brutalizing untold millions in Africa and of course why worry about the oppression of a billion in China? For the world has tiny democratic Israel as the root of all evil. Jews really do make the perfect scapegoat don’t they. Who will bear the burden if the liberals get their way and Israel (and the Jews too) disappear?

Anyway Mr. Nordlinger three impromptus in three days…impressive, you are on a roll!

Well in this case there are folks who hate the Jews (probably Arabs, but I shouldn't jump to conclusions, as they could be Noam Chomsky, sadly a Jew himself). Apparently nobody hates the Chinese enough to put up ads against them and nobody hates the African butchers enough (at least in this country - in Africa there are probably different butchers who would gladly kill them). In other words this is slightly different than the usual criticisms of the ridiculous amount of media coverage and UN condemnation. It's just a private group with enough hate to put up some gruesome sign on a city bus. But I'm sure that Ann Arbor does not allow political speech on its buses. I have no idea what the ACLU's claim is.

The people who build and use microphones, professionally, in labs or studios or on stage, spell the plural diminutive mics. Are those in the craft allowed to develop and evolve their own nomenclature and jargon? Or will they, too, be subject to the ruler-in-twitchy-hand of the hunchback octogenarian grammarian looking over the shoulder in such awkward proximity that the dripping from the tip of their nose diffuses the ink?

What's confusing about calling "Israel" Apartheid? Jews go here, non-Jews go there. Yellow license plates for Jews, whte plates for non-Jews. Roads (mostly nicely paved) for Jews, dirt roads for non-Jews. It doesn't take an Archbishop to figure this out, but Desmond Tutu will tell you...

The quotes refer to the temporality of "Israel". When many of us Ann Arborites were born, there was no Israel, so it's not outrageous to imagine its peaceful dismantlement in our lifetime, and there's no need for name-calling ("haters"). Americans have a choice: we can either support a Jewish supremacist state (much like, but not exactly like white supremacist South Africa) or we can support peace, and equality for all. But we cannot have both, and I choose peace.

Unfortunately for Mr. Nordlinger there’s two sides to every story.

Why do some people consider Israel to practice apartheid?

Israel and South Africa are different in many ways. There is ample evidence, however, that Israeli policies meet the broader definition of apartheid by separating and discriminating against Palestinian Arabs, through systems that are institutionalized by laws and decrees. Some of these policies bear resemblance to South Africa during its apartheid era.

Since its inception, Israel has striven to establish and maintain a strong Jewish majority within the state, treating the ratio of Jews to non-Jews as a national security issue. Israel's Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, considers the Palestinian citizens of Israel to be a great "demographic threat" facing Israel.

Over the years, Lieberman has advocated ridding Israel of its indigenous Palestinian inhabitants. He said in a November 5th 2006 interview with the Sunday Telegraph that Palestinian citizens of Israel, who comprise roughly 20 percent of Israel's population, were a "problem" that requires "separation" from the state. He added, "We established Israel as a Jewish country. I want to provide an Israel that is a Jewish, Zionist country. It's about what kind of country we want to see in the future. Either it will be an [ethnically mixed] country like any other, or it will continue as a Jewish country."

Many Israeli policies -- from the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinian Christians and Muslims in Israel's founding years and the denial of their internationally-recognized rights to return to their homes, to the route of Israel's current "security barrier" -- are designed to preserve Jewish demographic predominance.

This has led to discriminatory policies against all major categories of Palestinians either living under or affected by Israeli rule, including Palestinian refugees in exile. External Link

It’s not that I don’t agree and sympathize with the Israeli’s wish to keep their country for Jews; my objection is that Jews in America are by and large liberals who want, and fight, for America to be a multicultural, multiracial, multilingual, multiethnic stew of a nation. They fear that a national, united white country will turn into a Third Reich. Their paranoia has gone a long way in helping to destroy America. At the same time they expect us to fight their battles in the Mid East.
Their success is astounding. Look at all of the Republican candidates (except Ron Paul) who pledge allegiance not to America, but to Israel. External Link

This video would be hilarious if it wasn’t so pathetic.
