Battling Blight in Detroit: A Pictorial
An artistic approach to urban renewal

The Heidelberg Project was founded in 1986 by Detroit artist Tyree Guyton as a creative response to the blight and decay in his neighborhood. (See “Battling Blight in Detroit,” by NRO’s Jillian Kay Melchior.) The project uses recycled materials and found objects to transform abandoned buildings into whimsical installations, turning run-down streets into an outdoor community-art environment.
