ARE ALL HEROS [Misty Harlan]
My amazing boyfriend Lance Cpl. Michael Mughadam, H & S Company, 2nd Battalion,
23rd Marines, has been over seas for about 9 weeks now. He is so proud
to be a Marine and to be a member of the first reserve regiment in over
30 years to serve on the front lines. I just want to tell him that I love
him and I am so very proud of him! Everyone here says hello and we can't
wait for him to come home safe! Thank you to every member of every branch
out there fighting right now, not only for serving our great country,
but for looking after those who you are fighting with no matter what.
You are all heros!

My Son Lcpl. Shawn Sherman, 21, from Cincinnati Ohio, is currently serving
with 3rd batallion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Task Force Tarawa, in Operation
Iraqi Freedom. He went out on his first MEU last February where he particpated
in "Operation Enduring Freedom" and redeployed this past January to Kuwait.
He is the oldest of four boys who with his Dad and I love him very much,
miss him terribly, and pray daily for his safe return. The last letter
I received from my son before the war started told me his only concern
going in was that of his fellow Marines . . . that they would all make
it out safely. I pray they did as I pray for all of America's bravest
whose sacrifices have made this country great. God Bless & Semper Fidelis.

Our son has been in the Marines since January 31, 1999. He was deployed
to Kuwait on February 6, 2003. We are very proud of him and all the other
service men and women that are there making it safe for all of us. We
pray for your safe return. American people should be proud of our finest
men and women in the miltary. Most parents raise their children to be
proud of them — we have raised children the whole nation is proud

Force, 3rd Marine Air Wing. An Eagle Scout, he has always had a great
love for his country and chose to serve as a United States Marine after
completing high school. We love and miss him very much, and want him to
know how proud we are of him. We pray for him and all the brave men and
women of the United States, British, Australian, and Polish militaries,

just weeks after September 11th, while a senior in a Long Island High

WORRY ABOUT ME” [Bruce Davis]
This is my son, Lance Cpl. Terry Davis, who serves in Fox Company, 2nd
Battalion, 23rd Marines, the first reserve regiment to serve on the front
lines since Korea. He writes home: "Don't worry about me. I am happy to
be here. This is my contribution. I love the Marine Corps and I love America.
It's worth the sacrifice and the risk." His unit is part of Task Force
Tarawa. They were fighting in Al Nasiriya earlier this week and were featured
in a Stars and Stripes article after taking over a dozen Fedayeen
prisoners, some wearing American uniforms. Read about it here.

GREAT GENERATION [Anonymous]
I know three young men over there. One is an M.D. serving with the special
forces and is the kindest young man I know. The second has a very difficult
family background, and has survived to make himself a person of high honor.
He is a very quiet young man. The third is a Marine who asks all of his
friends who were against the war to be patient and see what happens. He
wants to be a congressman someday and would make a good one. I know these
three kids well they are the best young people I know. Very strong, but
very kind. This is one great generation of young people.

IN THE FAMILY [Scott Salvato]
My good friend and his two brothers and sister are all officers in the
U.S. Marine Corps. His Dad was permanently disabled as a Marine officer
in Vietnam. His sister is married to a Marine Corps officer. Now his youngest
brother and his own fiancée are fighting as Marines in Iraq. That one
family bears so much burden for the rest of us humbles me to no end. The
little kid I knew is fighting his nation's wars abroad. The beautiful
lady my buddy is going to marry is following right behind her future brother-in-law.
God bless Brendan Sullivan and Marta Devries. You're doing a hell of a

MESSAGE FROM FRANCE [Anonymous]
I send a message from France, Nice, Cote D'Azur: I am French and have
no links with the U.S.A. except cousins in Chicago I met a few years ago.
I want to tell American people how much I feel near them. I remember September
the 11th because I work in a French administration of state (prefecture)
and we were listening to a speech of our "prefet" in solidarity with what
happened. I remember I was looking at the French flag and thinking that
we could at least put near our flag the American flag in sign of true
solidarity. I remember how, only a week later, everybody had forgotten
the sufferings of Americans in those days and had no measure at all of
what it really meant for the world. I want to say today that I am deeply
ashamed of the non-concern and anti-Americanism that spread over France
— and maybe most of all on television and in the press (that take
us for kids). I want to say "we support our troops" and "God bless America"
because I really feel it.

THE FAITH [John R. Thomson]
Lieutenant Ian Thomson, somewhere in Iraq with his Combat Engineering
Battalion, 1st Marine Division, was five years old when he first said,
"Dad, I want to be a sojer." From that first commitment, Ian retained
his commitment through school and to his commissioning by retired Navy
Commander Marsh Thomson, his uncle and my brother. Our family lived in
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the first Gulf War (indeed, Ian first served
as one half of my NR nom de guerre, "Ian Alexander"). Having covered
five conflicts with a pen instead of a rifle, I deeply respect his choice,
as we do all the men and women who have volunteered to defend the rest
of us, and everything for which our nation stands.

Guard's F-16's to the 410th Air Expeditionary Wing. The 410th flies missions

The photo was taken just minutes before he deployed. Sepp's beautiful
wife, parents, five brothers, two sisters, in-laws, and 14 nieces and

Brendan McShea, 1st Lieutenant (USMA '01), is somewhere in Iraq with his
excellent Patriot missile battery, part of the 35th Brigade, 2nd Battallion
Air Defense Artillery team based in El Paso, Tex. He is proud to be serving
his country and to be helping to bring the hope of freedom to the people
of Iraq. He misses his young wife Elizabeth and his infant son, Liam,
who was only five days old when the deployment orders came in November.
We all miss Brendan and are praying for his and his comrades' safe and
swift return home. God bless all who are serving our country with courage

While not serving in the Gulf directly, my brother helps keep our shores
safe from terrorist threats serving the U.S. Coast Guard. He loves what
he does, and loves this country. He serves for his wife and two sons,
and for all of us. He joined the Coast Guard because our grandfather served
in the Coast Guard (he was in Pearl Harbor on duty that morning!).

Our son, LCpl Dennis R. (Rudy) Smith, is currently in Iraq with 3/2, India
Company, part of Task Force Tarawa. Every grunt's or soldier's face we
see on TV or the internet is our son. For whatever reason they are there
as individuals, they are there for us. This photograph was taken at Mountain
Warfare Training in Bridgeport, Calif., last fall. This is Rudy's second
tour to the Middle East, having spent a year in Bahrain, assigned to the
Marine Corps Security Batallion. We've heard nothing since two days before
the war started. God keep all our soldiers safe and return them home.

BUILD, THEY FIGHT [Joshua Claybourn]
My uncle, David Jackson, is with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion
7 (NMCB 7) that’s been deployed to Kuwait. “We Build, We Fight” is their
motto. For this operation they’re a part of the 1st Marine Expeditionary
Force Engineers. My uncle will be laying lots of concrete for runways,
jet aprons, tent pads, ammo depots, etc. He will also help build the dirt
berms around camps. David’s an amazing guy with a great sense of humor.
With a firm faith in God, David serves our country well.

Maj. Mary Elizabeth Tenhet is the Deputy Chief Nurse, 28th Combat Support
Hospital (a 296 bed field hospital out of Ft Bragg, N.C.). She is proudly
serving somewhere near the Iraqi border and fully comprehends the mission
of liberating Iraq and defending our Constitution and way of life. Her

One of my best friends from seminary is Navy Chaplain, Lt. Andrew D. Smith
of Havelock, N.C., who is giving pastoral care and the comfort of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ to the Marines somewhere in the desert of Iraq.
He is a faithful Lutheran pastor who also served on the USS Bataan
during Operation Enduring Freedom. Andy is an example of the many faithful
chaplains bringing peace in the midst of war.

My son CWO (Gunner) Nicholas Vitale, USMC, has served proudly in the Corps
for almost 18 years. He has fought in Panama, Desert Storm, and now Operation
Iraqi Freedom. He is fortunate to to serve with the best America has —
the United States Marine Corps Infantry. He is a great husband, a wonderful
father, an outstanding brother, and the best son one could wish for. We
are all very proud of him, love him and miss him. With the help of God

MSSA John Preston Jackson, USN, my brother, is following in my footsteps,
our brother's footsteps (Major, USAF), our father's (LT(jg), USN, Korea)
and uncle's footsteps (Radioman Third Class, USN, WW II), our grandfather's
footsteps (Sergeant, USA, WW I), and the footsteps of others in the family
line — going back to a distant ancestor, Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson
(Army of Northern Virginia, Civil War). I put him on an airplane to Bahrain
this past Sunday where he will serve aboard USS Dextrous (MCM-13),
a minesweeper. He's a post 9/11 enlistee and a patriot of the first order.
As a young sailor, he exemplifies the superb professionals in all the
military branches. I couldn't be more proud.

LONG VOYAGE [Cassandra Lopez]
My husband and best friend OS2 Christopher Lopez has been in the U.S.
Navy for 4 years, stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. He
left for what started as a routine WESTPAC — a six-month deployment
in the Pacific Ocean on July 17, 2002, and was due back January 20, 2003.
On Christmas morning, he called to tell me that their ship made it safe
and sound to Australia, which was to be their last foreign port before
coming home. He said he wished he could be with his family but that he
would be home in time for my birthday and my son's birthday, which he
has missed every year for the last 4 years. On New Year's Day he called
again from Australia. They were turning the ship around and heading to
the Gulf — indefinitely. It has been over nine months since I have
been able to see and touch my husband, and since he has been able to pick
up his son and play with him like fathers do. I pray every day and night
for his safe return and for the safe return of all the men and women fighting
for their loved ones back at home.

My husband, Glynn, is a B-52 crew member serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Aside from being a fantastic pilot of nearly 23 years experience, he's
also a wonderful husband and father to our 9 children. This is a photo
of him saying good-bye to our youngest daughter (adopted from Seoul, South
Korea, last year) when he was going on another deployment a few months
back. Our entire family is so proud of him.

Our priest and brother Knight, Rev. Michael Heninger, is now a chaplain
with the U.S. Army. He was moved by a story that troops in Desert Storm
were unable to receive Holy Communion for months at a time. To make sure
soldiers were cared for spiritually, he left the safety and comfort of
his position as Parochial Vicar for St. Pius X Catholic Church in Conyers,
Ga., for the opportunity to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to our
men and women in uniform. He has written that many of the brave people
he serves are making a new commitment to their faith as they give their
all to defend liberty. God Bless you captain! Know that we at St. Pius
and Knights of Columbus Council 10004 are praying for you and all of our
Armed Forces day and night.

Our son served as the first to deploy after 9/11 occurred and it was very
difficult on us having him leave at that time but we were proud of him
and of his desire to serve his country. Now we would like to continue

“Uncle Don” McPherson is the God Father to my little girl, and was a Navy
man for 12 years before accepting an Honorable Discharge. He was then
a police officer in Lake County, Calif., for several years. After 9/11
he re-upped in the Army (National Guard) and is currently posted in Afghanistan.
Don is the kind of guy you want defending the country: Brave, honorable,
and dedicated to his craft. If I were there, I would want him at my back.

My brother, Capt. Donald Ken LaRue, began his U.S. Army career in 1983
at Ft. Bragg, N.C., in the Special Forces — the Green Berets [crest
pictured left]. He excelled as a special-weapons expert and medic and
has used his medical training to become a physician's assistant serving
in the VA Hospital in Prescott, Ariz. He has since become a flight and
field surgeon, the duty he was called to perform for his country in Operation

Jason has only been in the Army a little over a year. He has recently
been deployed to Turkey from Germany. He can't tell us specifically what
he's doing . . . he's in Military Intelligence, but he went into the service
to work with computers. We are all proud of him and pray for his safety.

Ops Support IPT]
My brother-in-law, Major Matt Mingus, is serving with the Army's 12th
Aviation Brigade, somewhere in the desert. This is Matt's second trip
to southwest Asia. Several years ago, as a company commander for the rapid
reaction force at Fort Stewart, he and his solders were yanked up literally
on Christmas Eve to spend six months on the Kuwait-Iraq border. I won't
say what Matt's actual job is, but he is an expert in a critical field.
A close family friend says, "If the rest of our troops are anything like
Matt, Saddam doesn't have a chance." I myself spent several years working
in an Air Force squadron (civilian contractor), and helping to train many
of the USAF's fighter pilots. Judging by the remarkable airmen and officers
with whom I had the privilege to work during that experience, I can only
agree with my friend. Saddam doesn't have a chance.

WAS A STAND-UP GUY [Greg McNeal, 1LT, USAR]
Capt.
Chris Seifert was a friend of mine in college. I was deeply saddened
and angered to hear that he was murdered in his sleep by a member of his
own unit. When I was a young Army ROTC cadet at Lehigh University he served
as our Cadet Battalion Operations Officer (S3). Beyond leading and training
his soldiers in the 101st, Chris trained me and countless other Lehigh
"Steel" Battalion cadets, at least 17 of whom are serving in the Gulf
region. Chris was an outgoing and dedicated guy who had an ability to
communicate ideas and concepts to young future leaders in a way that stayed
with us beyond our cadet years and into our assignments as junior officers.
I am a better man for having known him, as I'm sure the men and women
in his unit are. He was a stand-up guy, a great leader, and a dedicated
American.

I was two years behind Chris
Seifert when we were in ROTC together at Lehigh University. I remember
instantly looking up to him. I remember him as the consummate instructor/peer.
When frustrated with his subordinates, he would stop, take a breath, see
things from their perspective. Instantly, he would go from frustrated
leader to teacher, and a team was formed. I remember trying to emulate
his calming, reassuring leadership style. I was a better cadet, and am
now a stronger officer within my own ranks, because of him. It's guys
like him that remind us what an amazing team the Army is despite its massive
scope. America has truly lost one of its best children.

Our nephew, Ryan Schrock, is a 1st lieutenant with the 101st Airborne.
He is a graduate of West Point, and is part of the 101st Airborne Air
Assault Division and the Air Defense Officer for the 1/187 Infantry Regiment
(3rd Brigade), also known as the Rakkasans. He has a wife Christy and
a three-month old son Colton at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His parents reside
in Daytona Beach, Florida, and he has a huge extended family all over
this great country praying for him and all our guys. You can read more
