I thoughtlessly said in my last post for Battleground that the last Republican to win Ohio but not the presidency was in 1944 when Dewey beat FDR in Ohio, but lost the presidency. This is not true: In 1960, Nixon won Ohio, but still lost the presidency to Kennedy. So, it has happened only twice, the last time in 1960. Sorry about that. I reader pointed this out, and I thank him.
