IOWA: HERE TEACHING IS A REAL JOB [Brian Kennedy 10/21 08:50 AM]
John Kerry had a good day in Iowa yesterday. Teresa Heinz Kerry did not. Her comment that former librarian, teacher and stay at home mom, Laura Bush, never had a “real job” undid any good Kerry had done for himself visiting Waterloo. It’s hard to imagine anything she could have said short of denouncing corn that would have been more damaging to Kerry’s prospects here. Iowans deeply value education. Teachers here are respected for their service and their profession is honored. Look no further than the back of the newly minted Iowa quarters featuring Grant Wood’s painting of a one room school house to understand that Iowans prize education. I suspect the talk around here this morning won’t be much about what the candidates said in their campaign appearances. Rather voters will be wondering why Mrs. Heinz Kerry doesn’t consider being a school teacher, or for that matter being a stay at home mom, constitutes “a real job”. The remark evidences yet again that the Kerry household has a hard time culturally connecting with the upper Midwest.
