IOWA: BAD NEWS FOR KERRY? [David Hogberg 10/21 09:51 AM]
My friend from yesterday in southeast Iowa did have some bad news to report. Hence my unease in my earlier post with doubting the polls.
First, she said, "The first debate hurt us. Many military people here were upset with Kerry shredding the justification for the war in Iraq, and not seeing Bush mount an adequate response." They have recovered since then, but the first debate was a setback.
She has is also aware that there are a lot of absentee votes in her county. "Up to 7,000" she reports, "and they are heavily Democratic." So the Democrats are voting early and, based on some recent media reports, maybe
often.
Finally, Scott and Linn County have had problems with stolen Bush signs. "They're stealing sings as fast as the Republicans can put them up. I think it is an indication of how scared they are that they will lose." Maybe. It
may also be an indication of how well intense and, perhaps, organized the other side is.
So, it isn't too difficult to come up with anecdotal evidence that portends well for Kerry. Thus, I'm not ready to dismiss the polls.
