MICHIGAN: GOOD NEWS [Henry Payne 10/21 03:11 PM]

A Detroit News poll - taken by the most accurate pollster of the 2000 Michigan presidential race - shows Bush jumping to a four-point lead over Kerry in Michigan.

Although the poll of 400 likely voters is within the margin of error of five percent, the results have created a stir in a state where Kerry has consistently led all summer long. The poll was conducted by Steve Mitchell - the only pollster who predicted Al Gore's final, five-point Michigan margin in the 2000 race.

Bush led with 46.9 percent in the poll, with Kerry at 42.7 percent. Ralph Nader polled 1.2 percent with 7.2 percent undecided. For more details see.

As a recently as Sept. 14, in a poll taken by Strategic Vision of Atlanta, Kerry led 47 to 41 percent over Bush with 10 percent undecided.

In other good poll news for GOPers, a state ballot initiative defining marriage as between a man and a woman is up big: 67 percent - 24 percent. Republicans believe the proposal will stimulate conservative voter turnout. Bush has also been working his western Michigan base hard with advertising. Grand Rapids is the third - that's right, third! - highest media buy in the country. Writing off heavily black Detroit, Bush must win west Michigan by a wide margin to carry the state.
