IOWA: THE ONLY POLL THAT COUNTS [Brian Kennedy 10/21 05:23 PM]
The big rumor around Iowa this afternoon is that WHO-TV in Des Moines is about to release a new poll showing President Bush leading in Iowa 51%-45%. Even the rumor is true, it will no doubt be followed by a poll tomorrow showing the race dead even. My advice is for all of us to start discounting these omnipresent media polls. They will continue to show a close race because the media wants a close race. It’s no different here in Iowa than when the TV news five day storm trackers predict a big blizzard is coming next week. It’s not for certain; rather there is a mere probability of a storm. More times than not, the big storms never happen. But the hype gets everyone turning on the TV set and running to the grocery store to stock up on soup. It doesn’t take another poll to tell us it’s going to be a close election. So turn off the TV, get your news at NRO, wage your campaign of one and remember, the only poll that counts is the one on Election Day. And I don’t mean the VNS exit polls.
