Judiciary Committee Approves Two Appellate Nominees

Text

Yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved two more nominees to the federal Circuit Courts of Appeals: Scott Matheson for the Tenth Circuit and Robert Chatigny for the Second Circuit. BLT reports here. Matheson was approved without a recorded vote. Chatigny, on the other hand, divided the committee largely along party lines. Senate Republicans are concerned about Chatigny’s handling of a capital case as a district judge, after which he was subject to an ethics complaint. (See here and here.) All seven committee Republicans voted against advancing Chatigny’s nomination. All committee Demcrats voted in favor of his nomination, except for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who abstained, saying she needs more time to review his record.

In related news yesterday, President Obama nominated Mississippi Supreme Court Justice James E. Graves Jr. to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
