SG Nominee Selected—Finally!

by Ed Whelan

More than eight months ago, when President Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, the White House knew that, in the almost certain event of Kagan’s confirmation, it would need to nominate her successor as SG. That near-certainty became a reality 5-1/2 months ago—two months before the start of the Supreme Court’s term. Yet somehow it wasn’t until today that the White House announced Obama’s selection of deputy White House counsel Donald Verrilli as the next SG.

I can’t imagine any good reason why the selection process should have taken so long.
