As Jim Geraghty observes, some Senators at the hearing were as interested in criticizing Chief Justice John Roberts as in praising Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, for one, cited Jeffrey Toobin’s New Yorker profile of Roberts to argue the Chief Justice has not kept his “promises of modesty or humility” on the bench.
