Catholic Recusals on the Supreme Court?
Earlier this week, the historian Joyce Appleby published an op-ed with the McClatchy-Tribune syndicate, suggesting that the Catholic justices on the Supreme Court should perhaps recuse themselves in cases where their church has taken a position (she cited abortion, same-sex marriage, and the death penalty). Today I have a response to her ill-considered notion at MoralAccountability.com. I should have mentioned in that piece that I first came across a mention of Appleby’s article at the “First Thoughts” blog at First Things.
