Quick Reaction to the Pick

Text

Sorry I’ve been so slow to post anything.  I was on my way to the airport when President Obama made the announcement, and I’m still finishing up grading exams.  (Where’s President Obama’s empathy for law professors mired in exam grading? Isn’t the academic commentariat important?)  My quick reaction: A politically shrewd pick.  Judge Sotomayor has extensive judical experience at both the trial and appellate level, and a compelling life story.  If confirmed (as I expect she will be) she will be a reilably liberal justice, probably to Justice Souter’s left on most issues.  Further, by nominating Sonia Sotomayor, the President gets to make history naming the first Hispanic woman to the Court.  An added bonus for Obama: Having satisfied the call for a Hispanic justice and more women on the Court, the next time there is an opening on the Court, he will have a freer hand in making a pick.
