Dean Kagan Picked for SG

Text

President-elect Obama has announced he will tap Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan to be the next Solicitor General.  Kagan has relatively little court experience, but is widely respected for her intellect and legal acumen.  She held several legal positions in the Clinton Adminsitration and was nominated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit but never confirmed.  Her tenure as HLS Dean has been widely praised.

The Boston Globe appears to have been first with the story here (and Orin Kerr reported on Kagan’s e-mail to HLS here).  Obama also announced several other picks for the Justice Department including David Ogden for Deputy Attorney General, Tom Perrelli as Associate Attorney General, and Dawn Johnsen as Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel.  Interestingly enough, Johnson was acting AAG for OLC in 1997-98 and is currently on the board of the American Constitution Society.
