Gentle Encouragement

Text

From Senator Cornyn’s office yesterday afternoon:

WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former Texas Supreme Court justice, made the following statement Monday regarding Senate Democrats and ongoing discussion of plans to filibuster the nomination of Judge Alito to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court:

“It’s encouraging to hear Senate Democrats come to the floor and pull back from talk of a filibuster against the nomination of Judge Alito. This will surely come as unwelcome news to the hard left—especially those opposition groups who have endorsed the ‘you name it, we’ll do it’ approach to opposing Judge Alito.

“Even the most extreme liberal groups cannot say with a straight face that this superbly qualified nominee lacks judicial excellence and deserves anything but a fair hearing and an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor.”
