Over at Politico, an unnamed Obama adviser endorses Bill Press’s Americans-are-spoiled theory:
“I tell you, it’s very frustrating that it’s not breaking through, when you look at these things and their scale,” said a top Obama adviser, who spoke on background to offer a candid take on the state of play. “Can you imagine if Bill Clinton had achieved even one of these? Part of it is because we are divided, even on the left . . . And part of it is the culture of immediate gratification.”
By the way, why do White House officials talk so candidly to Politico? Probably because they write lines like this: “Obama is perceived as failing to win over the public, even though by most conventional measures he is clearly succeeding.”
Silly readers. You only think you don’t like what he’s doing!
those are voters, too. well, this will never do. we can't let a little thing like democracy get in the way of Obama remaking the country according to every whim.
the next step is "comprehensive democracy reform" to "fix this broken system"
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseBy what "conventional measures" is President Obama "clearly succeeding" to win over the public? It's time for Obama promoters in the media to admit what they've always known. The more Barack Obama reveals himself, the less appealing he is.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYou can almost understand the bafflement of liberals - after all, Obama is getting lots of legislation passed! Failed presidents don't do anything at all!
Except what I think more Americans (not just conservatives) are concluding is that Obama is doing things which are actively harmful, which is immeasurably worse than doing nothing at all.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIf, as Politico asserts, Obama is successful, and if, as the polls indicate, his popularity is dropping, then the only conclusion that you can draw is:
The majority of Americans agree with Rush, and want Obama to fail.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseObama ran to the right of McCain and immediately broke all those campaign promises. But no one calls him liar.
I'm assuming we will take both houses in January. When the country suffers a lot while we fix this mess, will it remember what got us into it? Will there be patience while it gets worse before it gets better?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseObama is unique in that his rise to political power was based mostly on celebrity -- all he did to get elected was write books, make speeches and give good TV interviews. Media stuff.
On every specific issue (except ironically "War on Terror" stuff) he polls well below his overall approval rating. I think this is just the effect of his "celebrity glow" -- there is a certain % of the public that pays little attention to politics and likes him because he is "cool." He is a celebrity.
The problem with a celebrity presidency is those who vote for the "coolest" candidate are the least likely to vote. Those who pay attention to policy are more likely to vote and less likely to be impressed by celebrity. I don't think his personal popularity will translate into Dem votes without him on the ballot. Nor do I think he will do as well as his popularity polls in 2012, when he will be a politician with a track record and not just a celebrity endorsing "hope & change."
Furthermore, every "rising star" eventually becomes a "falling star" when the public gets tired of watching them on TV all the time. Obama is approaching that point, and I think he knows it -- notice how little he is in the news lately? Never talks to the press corps, just one-on-one's with friendly TV news clowns (with pre-established limits on topics of discussion I'm sure.)
I predict the tipping point when this rising star begins his inevitable and irreversible fall will occur on the evening of the first Tuesday in November!
