Another week, another poll showing a GOP challenger leading a Democrat incumbent in the House. This time it’s in New Mexico:
Eyewitness News 4’s exclusive Survey USA poll on the congressional race in New Mexico’s first district is a real shocker. It shows Republican challenger Jon Barela with a lead over incumbent Democratic congressman Martin Heinrich, 51% to 45% – with only 4% of the voters undecided.
Survey USA polled 559 likely voters from July 22-25, with a margin of error of 4.2%. Barela’s lead exceeds the margin of error and he is also over the “magic” 50% line that pollsters like to talk about.
Last week I noted eight polls in six weeks showing a GOP challenger ahead of an incumbent (or leading an open-seat race), and forgot Schilling’s lead over Hare in Illinois. So this would be number ten in about seven weeks.
This is wonderful news for us in NM. Heinrich is a pretty boy (he was in some photo spread of the most attractive people in Congress) whose votes have been with Pelosi 97% of the time. Barela is fairly unknown so far, so these numbers reflect that people are extremely dissatisfied with Heinrich. I only wish I could vote in that district, instead of the third, which is (alas) firmly in Democrat control.
