GOP in Position to Sweep Georgia’s Statewide Offices

None of these poll results are surprising, but the possibility of big GOP wins at the top of the ticket might mean something for some of Georgia’s competitive House races — in the 2nd District, the 8th District, and in the 12th District.

With one week before early voting is slated to begin and seven weeks prior to the general election, a new exclusive 11Alive/V-103 poll shows that Republicans are positioned for a sweep of Georgia’s major statewide offices.

Based on the poll, Republican gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal is set to block Democrat Roy Barnes’ bid for a second run as governor with a margin of 49 percent to 38 percent.

In the US Senate, Republican incumbent Johnny Isakson has looks to land a majority of votes among men, women, old and young voters from across the state. Isakson has the support of 56 percent of those surveyed, while challenger Mike Thurmond has 34 percent.

No surprises in the Lieutenant Governor’s race, with GOP incumbent Casey Cagle landing a second term by a 19 point margin over Democrat Carol Porter.

Former Cobb County Commission Chairman, Republican Sam Olens should defeat Democrat Ken Hodges in the race for the open Attorney General’s seat. And GOP John Barge is expected to handily defeat Democrat Joe Martin for the open State School Superintendent’s seat.

In the 2nd District, GOP State Rep. Mike Keown is taking on incumbent Democrat Sanford Bishop; in the 8th, Austin Scott is taking on incumbent Democrat Jim Marshall; in the 12th, Ray McKinney is taking on incumbent Democrat John Barrow.
