You don’t often see races go straight from “solid GOP” to “toss up,” but that’s just what Rasmussen sees in Maine’s gubernatorial race:
A month ago, Republican Paul LePage led Democrat Libby Mitchell by nearly 20 points in Maine’s gubernatorial race. Now LePage’s support has fallen to a new low, putting him in a near tie with Mitchell.
The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows LePage picking up 35% of the vote, while Mitchell draws support from 32%. Democrat-turned-independent Eliot Cutler now earns 21% of the vote. Six percent (6%) prefer some other candidate, and another six percent (6%) are undecided.
Another pollster put LePage up by one.
So what’s hurt Paul LePage? His declaration that he would tell President Obama to “go to hell”? His joke that he was ready to punch a reporter?
Do Maine voters agree with the Democrat that former Pres. George W. Bush is an “international terrorist”?
My guess? Moderate Republicans. They were always uneasy with LePage and he's given them the cover they need to flock to Cutler.
Keep in mind, these are the same folks who will scream at the top of their lungs if someone challenges Olympia Snowe in two years. Loyalty only goes one way with them.
