Indiana state treasurer Richard Mourdock, who is challenging Dick Lugar in the GOP Senate primary, now signs his fund-raising e-mails, “NOT Barack Obama’s Favorite Republican; Candidate, US Senate, Indiana.”
If Obama’s hug hurt Charlie Crist, I can only imagine how much this label will be cited in Indiana over the next year.
The clear implication is that Dick Lugar IS Obama's favorite Republican. But is there evidence for that insinuation? It's one thing to say that Lugar's positions are way to the left of the typical Indianan's. It's another thing to say that Obama has praise or kind words for Lugar in particular -- anything comparable to Obama's hug for Crist.
So, what will Mourdock point to as evidence of the high esteem Obama holds for Lugar?
The fact that Obama has openly said, in as many words, that Dick Lugar is his kind of Republican - yeah, I would say that it gives people that particular impression.
Daniels has told the Indianapolis Star a few weeks ago that he will be voting for Lugar in Indiana's U.S. Senate primary. So, if you're looking for yet another reason to not support Daniels, look no further than that!
