Then-candidate Barack Obama, February 13, 2008:
Obama said the desire to punish the perpetrators of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, shouldn’t blind people to the flaws of the military tribunals that the Bush administration established to try Guantanamo inmates.
“These trials will need to be above reproach,” the Illinois senator said in a statement Monday. “These trials are too important to be held in a flawed military commission system that has failed to convict anyone of a terrorist act since the 9/11 attacks and that has been embroiled in legal challenges.”
The news today:
President Barack Obama approved Monday the resumption of military trials for detainees at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, ending a two-year ban.
Under Obama’s order, Defense Secretary Robert Gates will rescind his January 2009 ban against bringing new cases against the terror suspects at the detention facility.
All statements from Barack Obama come with an expiration date. All of them.
The Geraghty Axiom of Presidential Pronouncement Impermanence once again shows its worth.

Hey look over there, a squirrel!

Reply to this commentLinkReport Abusethe "legal challenegs" in which the tribunals were embroiled, were all the making of Obama's buddies in the lefty legal lobby and ACLU. It is patently silly to raise the existence of legal challenges as evidence of illegitimacy. There was never anything wrong with the Bush-era tribunal system, regardless of what 5 members of the Supreme Court may ever have held. I fear, however, that Obama will so screw up even the military tribunals that terrorists will go free.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI have to give Obama credit, it takes him some time, but he does learn on the job. Maybe if we can keep electing him until 2035 he will figure out that the debt is killing us and Obamacare will destroy this country. But hey, he will eventually figure it out.

Legal challenges brought to you by Holder and his minions, currently serving in the DoJ.
