Palin’s Bus Destinations: The MSM Isn’t Cleared for That Information

As noted below, I’ll be on CNN’s “American Morning” discussing the Palin bus tour at an early hour this morning. It’s a big topic in the first Morning Jolt of the week…

The Noisiest Stealth Bus Tour Ever Gets Underway

…I see this comment, from an unnamed Palinite insider to Shushannah Walshe of the Daily Beast: “According to a source with knowledge of Palin’s operation and thinking, keep a careful eye on how long the tour lasts, because it is intended as a way to test the presidential waters. If the road trip ends abruptly, it’s a sign she didn’t get the enthusiastic responses she believes she needs to launch a campaign. If the tour heads to regions outside of the Northeast like Iowa and South Carolina that, the source says, is a “big indicator” that Palin will pull the trigger.”

Would even the most unhinged anti-Palinite expect small crowds for her? Don’t answer that, of course they would, in between Trig jokes. But for those of us here on earth, not possessed by a raving fury at Palin, aren’t we all expecting big crowds? Does anyone dispute that Sarah Palin can generate enthusiastic responses? She’s the opposite of a candidate whose support is a mile-wide and an inch deep; her backers are a plurality in GOP circles, whose depth of passion rivals the Mariana Trench.

Andy Barr of Politico apparently can’t get any answers from Team Sarah, and perhaps that wee bit of irritation may come through in his coverage of the bus tour: “For supporters and reporters looking for more details, Palin isn’t providing them. Palin’s staff has been unresponsive to reporters’ requests or told them to check the SarahPAC website, which updates with information only after she’s stopped somewhere. CNN reported Monday that some of Palin’s supporters had already started to gather midday at Gettysburg in hopes that she might be on her way. But by then, Palin’s bus was rolling into Mount Vernon, instead. Indeed, Twitter is about the only way to follow the former Alaska governor — unless you’re Fox News host Greta Van Susteren or her husband, John Coale. Van Susteren is traveling with Palin on Monday and is to conduct an interview inside the One Nation tour bus. Coale, who set up Palin’s political action committee in 2009 and serves as an informal adviser, was spotted with the Palin family at Mount Vernon. But even Van Susteren doesn’t seem to know what Palin’s up to next. “My producer, who talked to someone who works with her in order to set up the interview, told me last night that he would not tell her,” Van Susteren posted on her blog Monday. “We were told to check their website for any information they are releasing. He said they don’t want the media following them, and that includes us.’”

Talk about going over the reporters’ heads. This is a high-publicity stealth tour – the very last to know about the destinations will be the ones covering her, it seems.

Susan Duclos says “hurrah” to the entire concept: “The media seems peeved that the only straight up original news is found at SarahPac, where the donation buttons are prominent and she can get people to sign on for her email list giving her a bigger pool of email subscribers. Yes, all this is too confusing for the media outlets to understand… right. Let us not even mention the stories that have the information wrong where even their corrections screw the whole story up…no, we will leave that to Conservatives4Palin to point out. Palin has them all running in circles, fighting to keep up and failing miserably. Palin is not only getting all the media attention she wants, she is doing it on her terms. She is showing everyone, very clearly just how “lame” the lame stream media has become.”

Her tour needs a t-shirt, like concert tours, except all of the locations and dates are labeled, “For Her to Know, and You to Find Out.”

Note that on SarahPAC’s site, her last post was at Fort McHenry, Maryland. No schedule is posted. Where is the next stop? Somewhere in Delaware? (Do the tollbooths on I-95 count as a site?) Philadelphia? The much-rumored stop in Gettysburg?

UPDATE: My CNN appearance can be found here. At the link, you’ll find the freeze-frame midpoint with my eyes closed; I was slightly more awake than that image might suggest.

OK Mr Geraghty, I've followed you for years ago and you always appeared to be a loyal Repub, but now you appear to be the like the obligatory inside the Beltway echo chamber Palin Hater, appearing on venomous anti Palin networks such as MSNBC & CNN. The fact that you are appearing on those left wing networks to discuss the former Alaska Gov is a tipoff that you've joined the Palin Basher brigade, since you know the people asking you questions on those networks are anti Palin.

What happened to those days when Repubs stood up for Repubs on the Liberal dominated MSM; I guess you would prefer another term for Obama over Gov Palin. Anyway look at the bright side: As long as you, Wash DC/NY echo chamber Repubs like George Will, Charles Krauthammer and fake Repubs like David Brooks, Joe Scarborough, et al are willing to bash Gov Palin, you will always get invited back to the Liberal dominated networks.

Snark in what manner? Read the whole Jolt and it comes across as Palin doing it her way and the Lamestream media all up tight about it. If you WANT everyone to be against Palin you can find a reason to declare anyone her enemy. Stop looking for new enemies to fight. Stick with the declared ones that is enough business for anyone.

So who is NRO pushing this week, as the Anti-Palin candidate?

Is Pawlenty over, seeing as he is not catching despite all the NRO shilling?

Is it Romney's turn again?

Or should we jump on the Huntsman band-wagon?

I guess I'm missing the "Palin-bashing" here. I haven't seen him on TV, but that has more to do with doing more productive things with my time.

Just seems like he's enjoying the media's frustration when they're not spoon-fed news to rebroadcast.

Also, I think the snark regarding Delaware's toll booths has more to do with that state's lack of tourist sites than anything. What's there to visit? A screen door factory and the place where Montgomery Ward stores excess catalogs?

Jim, I am a Palinista and sometimes have been critical of your coverage of her. However, today I thought your articles and interview on CNN were fair and informative. Thank you for providing a balanced approach and your insights about Sarah.

Why is everyone desperate to discount Palin's bus stops by saying "of course she will get crowds"? Seems to me that is not at all the purpose of this tour.

Noone knows where she is going. There is no organizing of Pro-Palin groups to meet up wherever she goes. When she shows up, she mingles with regular tourists.

Which begs the question; we have been endlessly told that Palin is "toxic". I.e. everyone aside from some hardcore rightwingers "hate her". You would think if that is true, she would be have been boo'ed anywhere she goes on the east coast. But given the reception she has had so far, that doesn't seem true at all.

My guess?...

one LAST "tease" before a 2012 run becomes impossible, financially or organizationally.

Then it's showing up in Ames or Des Moines and saying "Well, gosh, we've just had such a great time travelling across this great land of ours, and we hope to do it some more this fall and next year"...

"Governor Palin! Governor Palin! What about running for President this year?"...

"Sorry, but I can't hear you, you lamestream Media'er you."....and she's back on Fox to push the DVD version of the "documentary" a week after leaving Iowa.

@Ellen very, very funny. However I think you can actually report on Palin without needing to be a hard core hater or a fanboy. Jim is neither trying to make him out to be an enemy of Palin simply because he is not a big fan of her is a very, very bad tactic. He is far more fair and even supportive of Palin then nearly all the lame stream media why make him out to be an enemy?

John Galt who is dismissing Palin's large crowds. If someone says "I know for sure Palin will attract large crowds, people love her, she is a popular politician" that is dismissive?

Give me a break. Politics is a complicated game and very hard to predict NR does itself no favors by becoming an arm of SarahPAC. If Sarah runs if she wins NR will support her against Obama don't worry. Jeez I just don't get the desire of some Palin supporters to look for and create enemies everywhere.

Good work Jim. Now, this will seem a little strange coming from an unapologetic Palinista like me, (I like that term JLA), but the whole thing between Greta Van Susteren, her Clinton supporting level II Scientologist husband John Coale, and Palin just seems a little weird. My advice to Sarah- cut the Greta schtick and start talking to other reporters/hosts. I've never liked Van Susteren, really, tho I've got no beef against her show. Maybe this is better posted at the media blog, but there are all kinds of conflicts of interests going on here. Maybe its my dislike of Scientologists, but I'd be a little wary if I were Sarah.

Thanks for the mention. I love watching her make media jump through hoops. As an aside, about the whole Paul Revere issue, I am beginning to think Palin is deliberately picking parts of history that aren't well known just so she can make fools of the liberal left. She might figure she doesn't need to discredit them because they are so easily manipulated into discrediting themselves.
