I find Newsweek’s cover illustration appalling.

The article itself is not that bad, covering a lot of ground about the history of the faith and the values of the modern community. But obviously they had to feature the cover that makes the GOP frontrunner look like a lunatic. On the inside of the magazine, they feature a slew of photos:
1. Angel Moroni. 2. Salt Lake Temple. 3. Brigham Young. 4. Mormon church founder Joseph Smith.5. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. 6. Prophet Thomas S. Monson (current head of the Mormon church). 7. Playwright Neil LaBute. 8. Actor Andrew Rannells playing a missionary in the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon. 9. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Senate majority leader. 10. Potential GOP presidential candidateJon Huntsman Jr. 11. The cast of HBO’s Big Love. 12. Ken Jennings, Jeopardy! champion. 13. Football star Steve Young. 14. Highly Effective author Stephen Covey. 15. Twilight author Stephenie Meyer. 16. Entertainers Donny and Marie Osmond. 17. Singer Brandon Flowers of the band the Killers. 18. Actress Katherine Heigl.19. Glenn Beck of Fox News. 20. Actor Ryan Gosling. 21. Singer Gladys Knight.
Nope. They had to take the GOP frontrunner and make him look like a deranged escapee from the set of “Glee.” Romney’s head is, in fact, put onto the image from the poster for the South Park guys’ musical.
The other thing is this: Without knowing, I presumed this must be the "Book of Mormon" poster photo-shopped with Mitt's head. But of course, that show is a purely NEW YORK "intelligentzia" phenom. This is an in-crowd making a joke to its in-crowd cover game. America at large (where the mag, of course, sells less and less) could care less. And of course, even while tut-tutting the anti-Mormon sentiments of the "red-neck" right, these lib NYC "journalists" engage in it more virulently than anyone else.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI wouldn't call South Park "Intelligensia". Trey Parker, who writes most of the material, is an atheist and a libertarian, but sees value in religion, even though he finds the "myths" of religion hysterical. And let me tell you, the Mormon "myth" is right up there with Scientology. Parker and Stone are far more "conservative" than Hollywood and are merciless slayer's of Sacred Cows and do it as inappropriately as possible, with everyone of all faiths and creeds.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseVile. Why not put Obama's head on this photo from The Scottsboro Boys because, well, he's black? External Link
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseYes, it is appalling, but this is why people who think Romney will be a safe & electable "nominee" is dead wrong.
Regardless of who we nominate, he or she will be savaged by the MSM and will have much higher negatives when the campaign is over.
It might be good to nominate someone who has already been through the ringer and who can fight back.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI concur Jim. Even though I’m not a Romney supporter by any stretch – as a Palin supporter I find this Newsweek illustration to be utterly ridiculous and an unfair characterization of Mitt’s faith. And it should be a wake up call to Republicans that no matter whom the GOP nominee ends up being, the nominee can expect this sort of garbage during the general election.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWell said.
There is no such thing as a "safe" GOP candidate.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMormon or Moron ... one letter difference that easily gets dropped in the minds eye ... well played Newsweek ...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseAhh the rapier wit of the bigot...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHad that been a conservative magazine with Obama's face photoshop'ed onto those two guys from the Philly New Black Panther party fame, it would have been shut down immediately and the protests outside of the magazines headquarters would have been boiling over like a Salem Witch Hunt.
So Mormons, what ya'all gonna do about it? You got game, gonna show some spine? You gonna let this $1 news rag (that's what it was sold for when it went belly up last year) walk all over you? Only time will tell if the SEIU purple-shirted people-beaters are the only folks with guts to take it to the streets!
Cue up the Doobie Bros - External Link
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseOh yeah - there's a thought out post. Talk about a strawman. Calling for Mormons to start blowing stuff up and breaking things or they're (we're) cowards? Yeah. Right.
Public Relations major from Harvard perhaps?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseNewsweek still exists? As an actual dead-tree magazine? I honestly had no idea. I thought the one-dollar-valued rag had gotten absorbed as a minor website in the Daily Beast portal.
Anyway, Romney should thank Newsweek for the stupidity. In fact, he should pay the magazine whatever they ask. This can only help him with GOP primary voters, his main obstacle.
If he ever gets to the general - a huge if, of course - Romney might well be the strongest GOP candidate against Obama. But he could easily stumble with ideological-purity-test primary voters. Newsweek's emnity sure can't hurt Mitt with them.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseDid you notice the other articles featured on the cover? Is there any editorial direction in Newsweek?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhen Newsqueak and the other MSM outlets start running their anti-Islam parody covers/episodes to go along with these, then I'll be interested. Until then, YAWWWN. The MSM continues to reveal itself as the cowardly group that it is.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo true.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe MSM celebrates the Virgin Mary illustrated with cow dung. Celebrates the "p-ss Christ". And yet MSM is too cowardly (fearful of firebombing fatwa enforcers?) to ever reprint the "offensive" Danish cartoons.
And a play about a child molester named Muhammad? Don't hold your breath!
This is the best that the overly sophisticated intellectuals who went to only (ONLY ONE, right Mike B?) the best colleges have to offer?
This puts paid to the lie that conservatives - or the GOP generally - should waste time with considerations of placating the left and its mouthpieces in the media.
The political left is a rabidly hate-filled constituency -- they hate everyone who is not as sophisticated and metropolitan as they are, whether it be our religions, our cultures, or our pastimes. That is why they put on the charade of being "tolerant" purveyors of "multiculturalism", and portray their opponents as racists.
You could nominate a Democrat, and they'd reach for the long knives, without the advantage of ANY manners or morals.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseUtterly appalling, like most everything about Newsweek these days. To fight this anti-Mormon bias is an important reason I will certainly vote for Romney if he is nominated; although he is not my first (or even my third) choice for the nomination.
Other readers have made the important point that whomever we nominate is going to be mercilessly trashed by the left. We may as well, then, nominate a strong conservative, and mostly ignore current polls. Obama is beatable, especially if the E.U. unravels financially before 2012.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe average Newsweek reader (or do they just buy it for the photo spreads?) has never heard of Romney ;)
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseFortunately, being on the cover of Newsweek, no one will see it.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHistory will remember Jim Geraghty as one of the last readers of "Newsweek". The only real question is whether he spent any money while doing so.
