It’s way too early to think about running mate options for the Republican presidential nominee in 2012. And there is no shortage of good options for whoever ends up winning the nomination.
But this morning, Quinnipiac surveys Pennsylvania’s registered voters and finds first-term Sen. Pat Toomey has a 45 – 28 percent approval rating, and some fans of Toomey are wondering aloud, “hey, he would make a good running mate, wouldn’t he?
Can we PLEASE stop pushing every newly elected official into running for president just because Obama got elected?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHe would also make a great Secretary of the Treasury, or Fed Chair
p.s. why do i have to enter "green innovation" as my CAPTCHA?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseGood point, Ditch.
Also: although I take a backseat to no one in my affection for Senator Toomey, isn't it a fait accompli that the Republican nominee is going to need to add foreign policy gravitas?
The veep nod already belongs to Petraeus if he wants it.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI meant Treasury Secretary, sorry for the faux pas
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseToomey appears very into bipartisanship. One of his first acts after being elected was to co-penn an op-ed with Claire McCaskill. He has stated that cross-party alliances are among the most fruitful in Washington. Is that the type of mindset we want going into what is going to be the most cruicial election in our lifetime? Or do we want someone who is not afraid of truth-telling, not concerned with being friends with the people across the ailse, by interested in trying to stop their agenda before it is too late?
Toomey's political skills may be stellar, but that remains to be proven. In the wave election last fall, he barely squeaked by a scandal-plagued opponent, and significantly underperformed fellow-Republican and Pennsylvanian Tom Corbett, who was comfortably elected governor.
Toomey was very quick to jump ship when John Boehner tried to defund Planned Parenthood as part of the CR deabcle. While Boehner did not cover himself in glory, and handled what should have been a winning issue in a timid and tongue-tied fashion, Toomey did him no favors by quickly urging him to back down. Is this the type of standard bearer we want next year?
