Obama: Still Getting the Hang of Answering Questions

Has Obama ever given a bravura performance at a press conference? No wonder he goes three months or so without doing them.

Today he mentioned a tax break for corporate jets six times. He didn’t mention that he signed legislation preserving the tax code provision into law, or that the grand total of the savings of ending that tax break would be about $3 billion over ten years.

The man who flies anywhere he wants, anytime, cost-free, complained at great length that other people’s private jets are insufficiently taxed. Tomorrow, Obama will fly on Air Force One to Philadelphia, Pa., to attend two DNC fundraisers, where he will probably again denounce the current tax rates on corporate jets, without anyone remarking on the irony.

What I think this reveals is that Barack Obama is not used to being challenged. Most of us have scoffed at his predictable straw men, his off-the-cuff references to tonsil-stealing doctors, his exhausted, “some on the right say we should take this extreme path, some on the left take this extreme path, but I choose this sensible path in the middle” framing of every issue.

As we recall from his attacks upon Paul Ryan at GWU, the Supreme Court justices at the State of the Union, and his jabs at Pete Hoekstra, Obama loves to go after his opponents in national addresses, with his targets in the audience, unable to respond. In the setting of the grandiose national address, there is rarely a rebuttal. Any interruption to dispute the facts — like, say, Rep. Joe Wilson yelling out, “You LIE!” during an address to Congress — comes across as rude to the office of the presidency. The Supreme Court is completely unused to being criticized to their faces; members of Congress are used to the back-and-forth of debates on the floor in which every accusation and assertion can be rebutted and cross-examined.

So even ten questions from the White House press corps can take Obama off his game. Among the highlights of today:

  • Asked about whether the War Powers Act was constitutional, he responded, “I’m not going to put my constitutional law professor hat on here.” Er, wait, wasn’t that a reason folks were supposed to vote for you?
  • Asked whether marriage was a civil right – a yes or no question that obviously put him on the spot about gay marriage – he began talking about separate issues, like hospital visitations.
  • Occasionally Obama’s gaffes would seem strangely honest, like when he said, “I’ll keep on giving you the same answer until I give you a different one,” on gay marriage, or “I don’t even have to get to the Constitutional question,” rather bluntly acknowledging he was ignoring Chuck Todd’s actual question on the War Powers Act.
  • The President constantly infuriated by the perception that he hates the private sector responded to a question, “The business community always complains about regulations.” Unlike unions, trial lawyers, public sector employees, apparently.
  • Asked about the ATF “Fast and Furious” operation, Obama said that Attorney General Eric Holder made very clear that he would have opposed the operation… you know, the one that occurred on his watch.
  • Discussing the DREAM Act, Obama said, “Kids who grow up here and think of themselves as Americans… let’s make sure those kids can stay.” There’s no dispute that many of these children and teens often have heartbreaking stories, and no real emotional or physical connection to their country of legal citizenship. But thinking of yourself as an American is not the same as being an American. Citizenship is not a state of mind.
  • “It’s time to stop playing games,” he concluded, and then ended the press conference for the next event on his schedule: welcoming the WNBA Champion Seattle Storm to the White House Rose Garden.

Obama survives difficult questions by avoiding them and waiting for the world to move on. His Republican opponents must challenge him, early and often, and consistently.

Another columnist at NRO makes at least a passing reference to the need of Republicans to openly and regularly challenge Barak Obama. Progress. But maybe you could work up to a steady trickle of such observations before Repuplican passivity is the ruin of us all?

Excellent.

How bad was it for Obama today?

It reminded me of Weiner's infamous denial before the press, claiming he was 'Hacked'.

Obama lied about his responsibility about the Deficit, the massive Spending, etc. He blamed Congress for all, insulted his own Party members by declaring the concerns about his WAR in Libya were just political 'fuss'.

It could not get uglier for this President as the lies are so obtuse. Everyone has a limit. Even a Partisan Press which has aided the Democratic Party devotedly. Even the spoiled Democratic Partisan Senators and Representatives who see this ship sinking and on fire.

Obama played Pelosi denial to the hilt today. It is a glaring mistake. Obama even claimed Congress can grow jobs via "construction", the same failed shovel ready nonsense which he joked about only weeks ago.

The lack of CEO Experience, the lack of REAL WORLD Experience, the politically correct enabling via his Education, etc., all have produced a disastrous offering - when this Nation needs some aspect of ethical Leadership.

Obama proves again he has no clue, thinks Americans are stupid, and will further push Our Nation downward for his own petty existence. The question is, will the Democratic Partisans follow him over a cliff?

Yes. This is what he is doing, and this is how to challenge him. Well said.

Maybe it's just me, but I keep hearing the echoes of the infamous "yacht tax" in Obama's "corporate jet" jag:

How did that work out for the ship-building industry and the working men and women who helped build the yachts? Not so well. History rhymes.

This is behavior commensurate with the mindset of a typical immature coffee house misanthrope.

Watching the MSM dance around the man with complete deference is nauseating. And very sad.

Conservative powers in DC do infact have a plan to call out the president. Just as we seen yesterday, the president was forced to the microphone and it wasn't pretty. We need to keep it up because the more he speaks the deeper he sinks.

I can't believe that Democrats still support this man. He is an embarrassment, a buffoon, and a world class con artist. The idea that he was ever thought as smart, intellectual, and honest was always the Left casting their own beliefs upon him. If I were a Democrat, I'd toss him overboard with the quickness because he is doing major damage to their political philosophy for lack of a better term.

Then again, can't be seen not supporting the black man. Don't want members of their own party calling them racists.

I did not watch the press conference, but does it matter that ATF is under the Treasury Department and he is referencing Holder?

If I recall, it was earlier reported that Holder had approved the ATF's "program", hence, I would assume he was protecting Holder.

From the ATF website:
Effective January 24, 2003, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was transferred under the Homeland Security bill to the Department of Justice. The law enforcement functions of ATF under the Department of the Treasury were transferred to the Department of Justice. The tax and trade functions of ATF will remain in the Treasury Department with the new Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

This guy is on the razor's edge. He is as ignorant of the Constitution as he is of every day life in America. Yes, he needs to be pressed and he IS in fact being pressed, by circumstances and even from his Lefty base. Reps have really fallen down on the War Powers issue. What? Do you have to support EVERY war regardless of its legality or efficacy? Are we now, actually the warmongers as we are accused? For Libya or against, it is illegal, and I am more or less for it. Keep the pressure on this moron. It will yield results.

“I’m not going to put my constitutional law professor hat on here.” -- O'Bozo

Uh...sorry to nitpick, nitwit, but you have never been a "constitutional law professor" or a professor of any kind. You were an adjunct who lectured nitwit law school freshmen in a 101 class.

Apparently even Obama himself is so insecure about his lack of knowledge and experience that he needs to embellish his resume, just like his drooling press sycophants.

Jim, you mention "cost-free" flying: The man who flies anywhere he wants, anytime, cost-free, complained at great length that other people’s private jets are insufficiently taxed.

The flying may be cost-free to Obama, but we taxpayers do NOT see it as cost-free.l

Well, it is rather hard to use a teleprompter to respond to a question...though I'm rather shocked they haven't pre-loaded answers into the teleprompter so the wizards behind the software curtain can provide the 'Greatest Orator Ever' with a little help ;)
