Today the Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List), a national pro-life organization, announced its first-ever endorsement in a GOP presidential primary.
“Among the field of strong pro-life candidates in the GOP primary, one stands out as a proven leader in this great human and civil rights cause of our time. Rick Santorum communicates the vision and has exhibited the strategic and tactical prowess the pro-life movement must have in order to succeed. Women and children deserve his leadership, grounded as it is in affirming the dignity of every person. At this inflection point in the primary process and a tipping point in history on the abortion issue, the Susan B. Anthony List endorses Rick Santorum for the Republican nomination for President,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBA List.
“Each one of the candidates in the Republican presidential field have made a commitment to be a pro-life president. However, none of them have the record of consistent leadership that Rick Santorum has demonstrated. At this critical moment in the race, our Board of Directors unanimously decided that we must stand with Rick Santorum, the candidate who throughout his career has stood so strongly for Life,” said Jane Abraham, Chairman of the SBA List Board of Directors.
This is probably not what Rick's people want at this particular time. It focuses on the extreme views (which I agree with 95% of the views but I am not wanting to be president and represent 100% of Americans, either) Santorum holds on religious issues- gambling and sex. It is not the battle I want at this time.
Next up, an out of the mainstream view of Islam (again I agree with but ..) by Santorum which has been neglected so far. During one of the debates, it seemed he was equating extremism with the whole religion rather than the fanatics. He got away with it then because he was sitting at a robust 1% about then, but now, the press will refocus.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseRick Santorum is obviously a serious pro life guy. No one really doubts that (even if he was a bit equivocal in 1990). But Rick needs to stop attacking libertarians if he really wants to expand his appeal beyond one segment of the GOP. External Link
And Rick needs to say how he plans to deal with this (and Rick did vote for the Bush Medicare expansion). External Link
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseMy feeling is that Santorum as candidate could set the pro-life cause back. In many states the cause has received most of what the majority agrees with them about. In Georgia, in the last governor's election, the pledge included no abortion in cases of rape and incest and no in vitro fertilization.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI always thought the goal was to start with banning Partial Birth Abortions and we were close with that at one time. And yet, we still have them legal.
So, are we ready for the full press on all social issues? I prefer piecemeal. Start with a ban on PBA.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSantorum is unelectable. I am pro-life; but, for goodness sakes when he says it is wrong to use contraception and sex is only for procreation; he is too extreme for me.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbusePope Santorum wins a biggy!...LOL
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo has "Daily Kos". ("Operation Hilarity")
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis was a very bad decision on their part. Santorum is going around the mainstream media this week trumpeting his support for Planned Parenthood through Title X funding. It makes SBA look like idiots who have been taken in by his rhetoric.
