New York Times Columnist Mocks Romney’s ‘Magic Underwear’

Dear management of the New York Times,

I hope you’re proud.

Mr. Blow may attempt to delete that Tweet, but it can, for now, be found here. Of course, this is the Internet. Nothing ever goes away completely.

One of your columnists hears a comment he does not like, from a Mormon presidential candidate, and responds, “Stick that in your magic underwear.”

(Lest you are unfamiliar with this particular practice of the Mormon faith, see here.)

We just witnessed ESPN firing an employee for using the phrase “chink in the armor” in a headline about the New York Knicks’ Jeremy Lin. While no one could prove a desire to mock Lin’s ethnic heritage, and the employee expressed great regret for what he insisted was an unthinking lapse, it was deemed unacceptable even as an honest mistake. Regardless of what one thinks of ESPN’s reaction, one is left to marvel at the contrast before us. Would the New York Times find it acceptable if one of their columnists chose to mock Muslim religious practices? Jewish faith practices?

But mocking some religions is okay? Doesn’t run afoul of any standards of the paper?

Hmm.

If he'd told Joe Lieberman to stuff it under his "stupid propeller hat" he'd be cleaning out his desk. Actually, maybe not. Anti-Semitism might be cool with the NYT. But if he'd told Keith Ellison to stuff it under his turban...

thanks for the good article. The only nit pick i have is that you should referance a "offical Mormon" website. A better link is External Link

the one you linked to looked ok but several sites try and sound offical and end up being an anti Mormon site

my 2 cents

Wow. Appalling that a Black man would use the same weapons of bigotry against a man of religion. Blow needs to go. This rhetoric used against Mormons is beyond offensive. Last I checked, the NYT's was subjected to Title VII. Last I checked, Mormon's are a protected class, equal to the protection offered Black Men, Mr. Blow. Last I checked, employees of an organization using social media to express their views can be viewed as representing the organization (NYT's). Blow needs to be held liable; NYT's should be held liable if they refuse to do something about this.

Antisemitism might be cool at the NY Times but it's not THAT cool. I think that stupid propeller hat, or maybe "stick that in your magic beanie," would easily have gotten the guy fired. And I would dearly like to see what would happen if he made a disparaging reference to the hijab. But there are SOME religions, you see, that are OK to mock. It says so right there in the NYT style manual:

"Do not mock Jewish or Islamic practices or clothing (it says) but sly or humorous references to any Christian symbols or practices are permitted. The Editors affirmatively invite any negative stereotypes for Mormons, so go to town, guys."

And bear in mind that this is from the style manual AFTER the recent "Linsanity" update.

Mr Blow, like others, knows his complexion will protect him from any response. We have a privileged class in this country and that will occur to the rest of them soon. Get ready for nauseating stuff

Let me get this straight: Mitt Romney is *not* privileged? Harvard, Wall Street, $250 Million in the bank and he's, what, one of the oppressed masses? Gimme a break.

Nice strawman. He never said Mitt Romney wasn't privileged. The issue is not Mitt Romney or his "privileged" status. The issue is the blatant bigotry that the NYT is allowing one of its employees to get away with. Keep it to the real issue, troll.

Mormons decided to wear "special" clothing because of the reference to God's giving Adam and Eve clothing. They were given that clothing AFTER they were kicked out of the Garden for sinning! DUH!

This is nothing. A mere love tap from the NYT. Wait until the General Election. Assuming Romney is the Nominee, you will see the gloves come off like never before. This will be the most brutal campaign ever. By election day, the NYT and the MSM will convince most of the public that Mormonism is a demonic cult, and that winged demons appear during ceremonies in their closed temples and have sex with the congregation and officers. The LDS will be depicted as a band of polygamous criminals and gangsters worse than Santaria worshiping gangs from Mexico. Romney could become President, but the LDS will be utterly destroyed in the process.

I'm curious. Did you make the same comment when John Kerry ran in 2004?

That is clearly "unfair". Romney made most of his money through hard work and investments, unlike Kerry, who was just a male golddigger who usurped money that another earned. I guess that does qualify him as a Democratic icon.

I dont recall Kerry being ridiculed over his religion - can you post a link that helps me remember?

no one said Romney is oppressed. Whether you like the man or not he has worked hard for what he has gotten (check out the facts). For some reason legitimate success in this country is looked down upon.

Success is only frowned upon by losers who cannot cut the mustard. And most liberals are losers. The only way they can feel less like losers is to tear down those who are better than them, or to prevent others from outpacing them, hence their love of socialism and equal outcomes. Those who cannot compete are liberals.

Legitimate success is frowned upon because the 48% of people in this country that are sucking at the government teet need someone to blame for their failures as human beings. Lock and Load, it's going to get nasty before it gets better.

Don't make this about Mitt Romney.

It's about bigotry and whether we hold people accountable equally for being anti-semitic, anti-Muslim and anti-Mormon.

Are some groups like Jews and Muslims protected (perhaps very appropriately), while Mormons are fair game and fun to pick on because they're a smaller demographic?

Shame on NYT and the media as a whole if they do nothing about this!

Nice try "Are some groups like Jews and Muslims protected (perhaps very appropriately), ". YES of course it is always fair game to attack Christians but heaven help anyone attacking the Jews or Muslims. NYT is made up of nothing but ignorant hypocritical cowards.

And in this recent blowup about the Korans which were inadvertently burnt, have you noticed how much of the craven "major media" capitulate in referring to the books as the "HOLY Koran?" When was the last time anyone at the NYT called a Bible "holy?"

Apparently, blowing things up and cutting people's heads off whenever you have a grievance DOES result in, if not respect, at least deference, especially among the cowardly elite.

Perchance Mormonism is fodder for liberals because most LDS are white and successful...
