A fascinating detail about life in the presidential bubble, from July 2010:
The president’s last personal car was a Ford Escape hybrid that was returned when the lease was up, an official said. He now is often driven in a car dubbed ‘the beast’ for its armor plating and bulletproof glass.
Obviously, presidents get few chances to drive themselves (that article says Obama has driven himself twice since spring 2007) and ex-presidents are probably chauffeured around for the rest of their days as well.
But when Obama says, “we are experiencing just another painful reminder of why developing new energy is so critical to our future,” and “if we’re going to avoid being at the mercy of these world events” . . . it’s fascinating to learn that not only does Obama not pay for his own gas, not only has it probably been at least six, and perhaps eight years since he’s pumped his own gas . . . he doesn’t even own or lease a car!
Most worthless article I have seen on NRO.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe only time President Obama says "we", "us", "our" is when he cannot say "I", "me", "my".
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThis is probably the dumbest article ever written in the history of journalism.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe President makes a perfectly reasonable point about developing alternatives to fossil fuels in order to limit the downside of price volatility. NRO points out that he doesn't drive himself, as though that rebuts his point.
Q: Are fuel prices not volatile? Are option contracts a better way to manage volatility? Will increasing the domestic supply of petroleum reduce volatility? Is it possible to reduce price volatility of a commodity like gasoline?
A: I think you'll find THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T EVEN PAY FOR GAS
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseUh, how is that in any way substantially different than President Bush's situation? (Other than the fact that 43 occasionally drove himself around in a truck while he was clearing brush on his property.)
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abusei have to say, as a conservative and an NRO devotee, I don t get this post. You need to get some sleep. The fact that Barack Obama, the duly elected president of the United States, does t pay for his own gas, is--how should I put i?t-not surprising. What was the point of this? That you re outraged that Obama does t pump his own gas? Seriously? Did George Bush pump his own gas? There must be some point that I m missing...
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI mean seriously, we Republicans are in the process of losing a winnable election--because of our lame candidates--and idiotic posts like, however, trivial, don't help.
Goodness knows that I'm no fan of Obama's but that was the lamest attempt at criticism that I've seen in a long time. From this Morning Jolt subscriber, "Way to dial it in on a Friday. Have a great weekend, Jim."
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe point was being made that since the President was using the term "we" it seems like he might have at least had some experience with what your average citizen goes through. I think the fact that he has driven himself twice since 2007 is being used to point out that perhaps he is a little out of touch with what the average citizen wants, needs or experiences. Unless you live in New York City, how many adults (professional types) do you know that don't own/lease a car or drive themselves around?
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseObviously the trolls are out in force, or thought is taking a vacation today. This post is relevant, just like President Bush (41) not knowing about scanners in stores back in the early 1990s, as it illustrates the disconnect between the POTUS and the rest of the population. Obama can think in grand schemes and ideas because he does not face the reality of the cost of transportation at the gas pump.
It was okay to mock 41 over the scanners; many men at that time were unaware of how they worked, when they have spouses who handle there shopping. So it should be fair to point out that only the 1% might be clueless as to the real costs of filling your tank in the USA, and the current President is one of their number.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseLet's take a look at the most recent Republican and Democratic presidents and ask which had lives that were 'out of touch' with the common man.
Obama - grew up poor/middle class.
Clinton - Grew up poor/middle class.
Bush 43 -- grew up very wealthy
Bush 41 - grew up very wealthy
This is not a winning issue for conservatives.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseWhat a waste of an article, was there a hidden point you are trying to make? You lucky to have a job in this tough economy as you don't seem to have the required skill and/or drive to write serious political essays etc... Obama and every President before him for the last 30 years or so, don't really have much choice in what type of car they are being driven around in. Nor do they have the opportunity to own a private car that they can cruise around in incognito and get away from it all for a few hours. I would buckle down if I were you, you should be let go for lack of effort and talent.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseI suppose the point here is that Obama leads a sheltered, protected life and will never personally experience the consequences of his own bad policies. The rest of us may be forced into small, unsafe, impractical green cars by his mad power grabs, but he'll be driven around in an armor-plated motorcade at taxpayer expense the rest of his life. Still, if that was the point, it was made somewhat obliquely.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseThe point that Jim appears to be attempting to make, admittedly rather poorly, is that Obama is not necessarily in touch with the reality of the rising cost of fuel. He has been so completely insulated from reality for so long that raising the question of what he might or might not be aware is a valid issue. Please remember that in response to a question about this, when the price of fuel was lower than it is now, Obama replied that we should make sure our tires were inflated correctly and that would take care of it.
His utterly callous carelesness combined with his complete cluelessness are not a reccommendation for his retention.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseEvery facet of Obama's socioeconomic beliefs and policies reveal a persona and mentality utterly divorced from any semblance of comprehension or personal relation to the economic realities that workers in the private sector (i.e., the majority of Americans) have to deal with every day. I had never spend much time pondering Obam's utter lack of private sector work experience prior to his entry into politics (consisting of a scant five minutes spent as a law professor, if that can be said to be relevant experience), but it becomes clear in retrospect that his affinity for Robin Hood-style, big-government socialism and crony capitalism properly reflects someone who has never had to work at what one would call a "real job," where merit and skills are valued more than the gift of gab and personal charisma.
The man receives free housing, free food, free lodging, free healthcare, free transportation, free security, and a pension, to boot. How can he possibly relate to the average American;s economic struggles? He has never wanted for anything since his meteoric rise in politics began. His arrogant dictates to American companies ("Hire more American workers at home") and election-year posturing on taxes (lower the corporate tax rate, but raise taxes everywhere else under the sun) similarly reveal a breathtaking naivete or outright ignorance with respect to basic notions of capitalism and economics.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseHey let's give Jim the benefit of the doubt on this "criticism" of the President. He probably heard it on Rush or saw it on Newsmax and thought it must be some great material. I mean how can someone who only last drove himself around 4-5 years ago not appreciate the cost of gas and it's impact on the average American family whose wages have been stagnant for most of the last 40 years. I mean the math is really hard.

Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseSo now, not only is Obama supposed to sell Air Force One and fly coach but he needs to drive around Washington in his own car.
Of course, if he ever did buy a vehicle, there would be something terribly wrong with what he bought.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseTruly fascinating.
Reply to this commentLinkReport Abuseyou people need to stop your complaining about NR and NRO.
Reply to this commentLinkReport AbuseIf you don't like it, stop reading and go find something and somebody else to hate on.
losers.
Reminds me when Bush Sr. did not know what a super market scanner was. Not surprising, he was not shopping when they came into existence.
