U.N. Mission in Haiti Readying for Hurricane

In this morning’s Jolt, I mentioned that the “Ha-ha, Hurricane Isaac tells us God hates Republicans” jokes won’t seem so funny if the hurricane ends up inflicting mass suffering on Haiti, an impoverished island country that has already endured one catastrophe after another.

A Jolt reader, Lt. Cmdr. Jim Hoeft, is currently the military spokesperson for the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti. He sends along this statement about how they’re preparing for the hurricane down there:

We are taking all precautions necessary to ensure the safety of our personnel during the storm and are prepared to respond to the best of our ability immediately in its aftermath.  My hope is that there is not ‘mass suffering’ and that the storm continues to weaken as it heads northwest towards the Gulf of Mexico and western Florida.

Here’s hoping Jim and everyone else stay safe down there!
