Two-Term GOP Governor to Run for Senate in South Dakota

Looks like South Dakota Republicans will have at least one big-name candidate running for Senate in 2014: former South Dakota governor Mike Rounds has tossed his hat in the ring.

Rounds, scheduled to discuss the decision in events around the state today, announced his decision in a news release this morning.

“I am here today to ask the people of South Dakota for their support and to allow me to work for them as their United States Senator in 2014,” Rounds said in a statement.

Rounds is running for the Senate seat held by three-term Sen. Tim Johnson, a Democrat.

Johnson released his own statement saying he was focusing on his work in Washington, D.C.

“I consider Mike a friend, and I welcome him to the race,” Johnson said.

Rounds served two terms as governor of South Dakota, from January 2003 to January 2011.
