Ken Cuccinelli’s Education Ad, Hitting All the Familiar Notes

Text

You tell me: Is this Ken Cuccinelli ad cookie-cutter, straight out of a mid-90s playbook, or does it hit the sweet spot for those suburban soccer moms?

I look at it and see a “greatest hits” compilation of political ad tropes: the blue shirt, speaking to the camera in the empty classroom, B-roll footage of the child getting on the school bus, the candidate reading to kids, pledges to ensure education dollars are spent in the classroom, to reduce class sizes and to “put our children first.” . . . Then again, all of these elements have become standard in these sorts of ads because they presumably work.
