Technically, You Could Say He’s Spending a Lot of Time Outside the District

Here’s a challenger to a sitting Republican congressman who has a pretty good excuse for missing campaign events:

A candidate for the 4th U.S. Congressional District says he’ll continue his campaign despite being told his Oklahoma Army National Guard unit will be deploying to Afghanistan.

Republican R.J. Harris announced Monday that he’s expected to deploy sometime this summer. It will be Harris’ third combat tour. The 37-year-old previously served two tours in Iraq . . .

Harris is running for the Republican nomination. Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Cole is expected to run for re-election to a fifth term.

I’m picturing a scenario for some unusual phone interviews for R. J. Harris: “How do I feel about my opponent’s attack ads? Ma’am, you’re going to have to speak louder, I’m currently repelling a Taliban offensive.”

The Oklahoma primary is July 27.
