‘This is a trainwreck. Illinois should be embarrassed by this spectacle.’

Gov. Rod Blagojevich has just completed his press conference, announcing that he is naming Roland Burris to take Barack Obama’s Senate seat.

Commentary from the various politically astute folks in my Twitter feed:

Hands down the very worst press conference I’ve ever seen.

(My thought: Didn’t see Sen. Bob Torricelli’s announcement that he wasn’t running for reelection, huh? If I recall correctly, the highlight was, “When did we become such an unforgiving country?”)

I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a more bizarre press conference than what’s happening right now in Illinois with Roland Burris.

Wow. Congressman Rush just asked the crowd not to “lynch” Roland Burris?!

This is a trainwreck. Illinois should be embarrassed by this spectacle.

The Democratic talking head on Fox News is emphasizing that Blago is fully within his legal rights to make the appointment, and crediting Blagojevich for recognizing that the African-American voting bloc is the most powerful in the state. Unbelievable.

UPDATE: Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn is denouncing Blago’s gambit. “He is not fit to be governor, thus he is not fit to appoint anyone to be senator.”
