Ross and Emerson

Ross Douthat slams Emerson in the piece Jonah linked. I don’t think he slams him right. Emerson is not the father of windiness, he is the father of Nietzsche (Nietzsche himself said so). If you take him seriously, the claims he makes are astonishing.

I completely disagree with Ross on Emerson’s prose. It is magical–magic mushrooms, perhaps, but still.
