A War by Any Other Name

Text

Andrew McCarthy’s piece today is right on the money. One of the reasons we have our present difficulties was our failure to recognize that we were at war with al Qaeda in the 1990s, and to behave as such. Also worth noting: Earlier this year Army Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism during the battle for Baghdad’s airport. Like other awardees, his name was to be engraved in the Pentagon’s “Hall of Heroes.” A debate ensued over what heading to put over his name — Operation Iraqi Freedom? The Global War on Terrorism? What exactly was he involved in? Ultimately they settled on the simple and to the point “War on Terrorism.” If it’s good enough for the Hall of Heroes it should be good enough for anyone.
