Chesterton’s wonderful phrase (and I am not a fan of his prose) was “the democracy of the dead.”

Some years ago it turned out that WFB’s grandfather had been one of the dead who voted for LBJ in the Senate race that earned him his sobriquet, Landslide Lyndon. Joe Sobran wrote a delightful memo hailing the traditionalism of Texas politics.
