The former Pittsburgh Steeler lineman died Thursday when a tree he was cutting down with a chainsaw fell on him. Courson was notable for being one of the very first professional athletes to acknowledge the use of anabolic steroids. Courson went public with his drug use in — get ready for this — 1985. His book “False Glory” chronicled his steroid use and the atmosphere in both the NCAA and the NFL which led to it. I drew heavily upon his insights when I wrote an episode of “Coach” that dealt with the issue.
