The Corner

The one and only.

George Best, Rip

I never was lucky enough to see George Best, perhaps the greatest player the British game has ever seen and an icon of the England of my childhood years, play football (soccer) live, although, fittingly enough (in essence he drank himself to death), I did sit next to him in a bar in London’s Brompton Road at some time in the 1980s.

For those of you who are interested in soccer, here’s a beautifully written obituary from the Guardian. And for those of you who are not, here’s Best on Best:

“I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”
