“Conservative Poland Roils European Union”

Graham Bowley reports, in the New York Times: “From the perspective of the cold war and decades of Soviet bullying, Poland’s leanings toward the United States may be understandable. In a similar fashion, Poles adhered to the Roman Catholic Church for comfort during the Communist years.” Yes, the support for America and Catholicism is certainly regrettable, but it may be understandable. (I’m a little perplexed by Bowley’s reference to Sarah Ludford as “a Liberal member of the European Parliament from Britain.” Has the Liberal Party been revived? Ludford’s website identifies her as a Liberal Democrat.)
