Tree Recipe? a Christmas Bleg

After much huffing and puffing (and some uttering, sote voce, of unChristmas like words), I finally got our Christmas tree up. Next task: Watering. I seem to remember that my mother used to mix up a concoction each year to keep the tree fresh–something, odd as it sounds, involving Clorox and aspirin mixed in tap water. Are these the right ingredients? If so, in what proportions?

If a reader of this happy Corner could provide me with a simple and effective recipe to use in watering the tree, I’d be happy to extend the warmest of season’s greetings, richly mixed with gratitude.
