Also worth noting, Byron, is that the Patriot bill that Sununu and company filibustered included, in some instances, more civil-liberties protections than the existing act that has just been extended. For example, one of the main sticking points has been the nondisclosure requirements that come with national security letters. The bill creates judicial review for those “gag orders.” Extending the old Patriot Act means that there will continue to be no review of those orders.
