Grading Uclaprofs.Com

I am all for serious efforts to document the extent to which academia tilts Left, and I see no problem with highlighting actual instances in which individual professors use their classrooms as political soapboxes — academic freedom does not mean immunity from criticism. As far as I can tell, however, the website getting so much media attention is something of a blunderbuss. Organized by the “Bruin Alumni Association, the site fails to measure up as a serious effort to document actual academic bias. UCLA law prof Eugene Volokh is no fan of the site, calling it “shallow and unpersuasive.” Professor Bainbridge, another right-leaning member of the UCLA law faculty, thinks some criticism of the site is overdrawn, but also notes that the site conflates professors’ outside political activities with classroom bias. Kieran Healy has more.
