An AP story over the weekend about the recent burning of five Alabama churches cautions: “Unlike a 1996 outbreak of fires at black churches in Alabama and elsewhere, there was no common thread of race.” But readers may recall that the 1996 media frenzy over black churches being torched by Southern white supremacists turned out to be baseless. Oh, well. Great story, though, wasn’t it?
