Some years ago I was hosting a BBC show round about Thanksgiving, in the course of which we decided to explain the holiday to a British audience. I said, “We’ve all heard about the turkey and the pumpkin pie and the pecan pie, but today we’ll be peekin’ behind the pie as we look at the origins of this most American of holidays…”

At that point, my special guest, Martha Stewart, interrupted: “It’s pe-KAHN.”

That would seem to settle it. On the other hand, there’s Jerry Herman’s rousing seventh chorus of Mame:

“We’re baking PEE-can pies again!
Tonight the chicken fries again!
This time the south will rise again!
Mame!”
