No Affirmative Action For Immigrants (or Anyone Else)

Text

Ed Blum and I suggested this a couple of years ago, but let me suggest it again: Let’s include in the immigration legislation a proviso that makes it illegal to give any immigrant a preference on the basis of his or her race, color, or national origin. Recent immigrants can hardly claim to have been victims of historical discrimination, right? And if anyone complains that immigrants shouldn’t be singled out as ineligible for preferences, then we can graciously concede that, indeed, this principle ought to be expanded to include those already here, too.
