Re: Why We Prayed for a Bush Victory


I agree with comments by Kathryn and some readers.  I should have said that Bush doesn’t make major decisions that he doesn’t think are the right thing to do.   But sometimes you lose, and you have to make it look like you won ( e.g. campaign finance, school vouchers, or the creation of Department of Homeland Security).  And sometimes you can’t do the right thing because it would alienate some important constituency over an issue that simply doesn’t matter that much (this is why the White House lets Cuban-Americans in Miami have their way on Cuba policy, even when it knows that what they want is self-defeating).  My real real point was that Clinton’s transparent lack of principles used to make me desperate, and from that point of view, the Bush presidency has been a deliverance.
